Here we briefly introduce you to two art opportunities tailor made for film-enthusiasts who at least got one short-film in their repertoire ready to be showcased at festivals around the world.
Japan: Submit short films under 25 minutes and be associated with an Academy Awards® accredited festival held in Tokyo
The festival’s name itself doesn’t beat around the bush: Called the ‘Short Shorts Film Festival’, this get-together of international and Japanese filmmakers will be held in June 2023 in Tokyo. Interesting to note: The festival is accredited with the Academy Awards. - Who wouldn’t want to be somewhat linked to one of the world’s most renowned movie awards!
The Short Shorts Film Festival is not only empowering film enthusiasts from Tokyo but from all over the place. Established in 1999, it is one the largest international short film festivals in Asia. This competitive oppty is open to a wide range of cinematographic and dramaturgic genres: From CG animation to non-fiction.
There are awards for each category, with prize money ranging from 600,000 to 1,000,000 JPY. Winners of the competition will be eligible for nomination in the short film categories of the Academy Awards® the following year.

UK Video Star! Submit you short film to be projected onto public buildings in the UK
FYI: This open call emphasizes a destigmatized approach on sexual orientation and identity.
This open call brings your locally crafted short films, no matter whether they are experimental or digital works, all the way to the UK to be watched and cherished at a community-festival called Night Watch. Note: Only films less than five minutes in duration are eligible.
Selected submissions will be screened in Crawley, a town in West Sussex, about 50 km South of London. Night Watch is an outdoor film trail taking place in January and February 2023, with film and video works projected onto buildings around the town of Crawley.
Criteria for screening submission:
- Between 2 and 5 minutes in length
- Be engaging for viewers who may be passing in the street (visually stimulating, humorous, narrative, spectacular, fun, surprising, accessible, …)
- Subtitles for non-english films
