At this time of the year, most towns and cities in Austria are not only freezingly cold, as it’s winter over there, but also decorated for Christmas and in festive cheer. In this bulletin we summarize three different art opportunities from Austria. If you plan to apply for any of the following open calls, give us a heads up if you happen to be selected! We’ll treat you a cup of mulled wine!

Snowy landscapes as endless projection surfaces

Held in a small town called Flachau in Austria, this open call offers a very wintery experience: A contemporary art and architecture exhibition during winter season. This opportunity is open for architecture practitioners as well as art practitioners specializing in sound art, video art, performance, theatre, installation or ‘dynamic land art’.

minus20degree, the organizer of this open call, is especially interested in art that takes and needs space, as well as art that is mobile or can make the audience move (physically, we believe). Whether you have your audience moving or not, you might shiver and feel cold considering that the exhibition will take place in January 2024, during winter in Austria.

The organizers of this call offer an artist fee of around Rp 16,6 million as well as a travel and production budget. Accommodation will be provided. This call is open for single artists as well as collectives at any stage of their career and any experience-level!

Small town glory, big time art residency

The second art opportunity in our programme-round-up could be of interest for anyone enthusiastic about visual arts – no matter if you are a visual artist per se, a media artist or a curator. The city of Schwaz in Austria, an old mining town surrounded by nature, is granting this residency to international art practitioners who’d like to go on a ‘healing’-trip and slow down their work processes. With nature 360 around you, contemplating on art and whatnot couldn’t sound any more desirable!

The residency aims to foster an intercultural dialogue in which the artistic process, research and production can be explored in juxtaposition with local themes. The hosts offer a studio apartment and a workroom for four to eight weeks of residency. The residency is scheduled for April and May 2023. The city of Schwaz in Austria also issues a stipend of EUR 1.500 per month for the time of residency. Accordingly, EUR 3.000 for the whole period of eight weeks. Travel costs are only partly covered.

Anti-smooth!

Last but not least, here’s an art opportunity most suitable for interdisciplinary creatives. Located in the city of Linz in Austria, the bb15 art space, an aspiring underground art hub, is looking for art works with a very certain angle of attack: As quoted from the organizer’s website, bb15 art space is looking for ‘projects that bring tension, distortion and counter-current into the flow of things.’ There you go!

bb15 will eventually pour the outcome of this open call into a series of exhibitions, performances, screenings, happenings and talks.

What’s covered? This production-residency will last for 14 days and bb15 as the facilitator invites you to go on site-specific research in the city of Linz. Participating artists will receive a fee of EUR 800. Accommodation will be provided. This programme is scheduled to take place in either Spring 2023 or at the end of the year.
